Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has opened volunteer applications for its 2027 Parade, Fair Day and Medical teams, calling on community members to help bring next year’s festival to life.

The festival runs from 12 February to 7 March 2027, with opportunities across event operations, logistics, customer service, merchandise and first aid.

And while the glitter tends to get the attention, there’s a whole lot of work behind a celebration this big.

More than 2,000 volunteers help deliver Mardi Gras each year, supporting hundreds of thousands of participants and spectators. They help keep events running, welcome attendees and make sure our community can celebrate safely, whether that’s along Oxford Street for the Parade or among the crowds at Victoria Park for Fair Day.

Organisers are welcoming both familiar faces and first-time volunteers, with roles across the three teams offering different ways to get involved.

“Whether you’re a returning volunteer or joining us for the first time, there’s a place for you in the 2027 team,” Mardi Gras said in its announcement.

“By volunteering with Mardi Gras, you’ll play an important role in welcoming attendees, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and creating moments that will be remembered for years to come.”

For anyone who’s wanted to get more involved in queer community life, it’s an opportunity to meet people while helping deliver some of the biggest gatherings on our calendar.

What Mardi Gras Medical Volunteers Need To Know

Returning Mardi Gras medical volunteers will need to update their qualifications and certifications as part of their 2027 application.

All relevant documentation must be current and uploaded when applying. The Medical team must review and approve those documents before volunteers can access and select available shifts.

Applicants can explore the available events and roles through the volunteer portal, where descriptions outline any experience required. New applicants will need to create a volunteer profile, while returning applicants should check their existing details are up to date.

You can find out more and apply through the Mardi Gras volunteer website.
