Sydney honours peace prize recipient

Indian physicist and environmentalist Dr Vandana Shiva has been awarded the 2010 Sydney Peace Prize during a three day celebration of her accomplishments across Sydney.

The 57-year-old activist started her trip on November 3 when she gave the City of Sydney Peace Prize Lecture to an audience at the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House.

The actual awarding of the prize took place on the evening of November 4 and Dr Shiva was then a guest of 1,500 high school children in a traditional peace festival welcome held at Cabramatta High School on November 5.

In the award citation Dr Shiva is recognised for her: “courageous leadership of movements for social justice – the empowerment of women in developing countries, advocacy of the human rights of small farming communities and for her scientific analysis of environmental sustainability.”

Dr Shiva was gracious in her award acceptance choosing to acknowledge the previous recipients of the prize.

“I’m honoured to receive this prestigious award and to follow in the footsteps of so many significant world citizens,” she said.
