SYDNEY FRINGE: IT’S A GUY THING

SYDNEY FRINGE: IT’S A GUY THING

Modern cabaret is in danger of falling into bad habits – riffing on past glories, or trying too hard to be progressive and edgy. It’s a Guy Thing manages to side-step these traps and delivers a funny, challenging and emotionally intelligent show. Kobi Jae sings songs of men and masculinity, taking the audience on a journey from Bowie to Joy Division – via Cliff Richard. At times she is fearless, tackling classics like Dave Warner’s Suburban Boy and giving them a torch-song twist. To some extent, she is still a work in progress – patter and mood changes need to be more consistently slick.  However, this is a show which will grow in scope and confidence along with its performer. Director Rowan Greaves developed It’s a Guy Thing as a launch pad for its young star and his belief in her ability is well rewarded here. Kobi Jae is one to watch.
