Swimmers left in the dark

Around 100 swimmers were left underground and in the dark without warning when the lights in the change rooms at Cook + Phillip Park in the city went out.

‘The room was suddenly totally dark and black, it was frightening,’ said a resident who was in the change rooms.

‘Patrons including myself were very scared. I thought it may have been a terrorist alarm. I was concerned for everyone’s personal safety. Patrons had to crawl along side the walls get out.’

When asked, staff said they had turned off the lights to do repairs. There appeared to be no emergency backup lighting system.

The resident notified Council of the problem which occurred at about 12.30pm on 6 January, but had not received a reply.
