Specialist team targets big events

A specialist team of police will target alcohol-related crimes at events like ANZAC Day and New Years Eve.
Police Minister David Campbell said a team of 30 NSW police officers would formulate pro-active strategies to help manage big events and major sporting events across the state.
“These 30 officers will form alcohol hotspot coordination units, which will target areas across the state that are known for drunken violence,” Minister Campbell said.
“These officers will be a great boost to the NSW Police Force in its ongoing efforts to drive down alcohol related crime.”
Mr Campbell said the specialist officers would work in tandem with revised liquor laws, due to come into effect in July.
“New laws come into place later in the year making it an offence for an intoxicated person who has been removed from a licensed premises to attempt to re-enter that premises,” he said.
“We’re also increasing fines and penalties for premises who supply alcohol to minors and intoxicated people.”
During the last financial year the government invested $4.9 million in high-visibility policing to tackle street crime, Mr Campbell said.
