SOMETHING BORROWED

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Darcy (Kate Hudson) are BFFs until Rachel begins an affair with Darcy’s fiancé Dex (Colin Egglesfield). Rachel and Dex had met at law school, and she was working up the courage to make her move when the vivacious but selfish Darcy got her claws on him first. This film has some funny and surprising moments with good acting, (a particular delight is John Krasinski who plays Rachel’s childhood friend Ethan). Something Borrowed is not as formulaic as other romantic comedies. Complex plotlines; unpredictable outcomes; and well-rounded characters are refreshing. Unfortunately though for rom-com lovers, the romance aspect is lacking. This is not a love story you would want to tell your grandchildren. (ES) ***
