SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE ON SCREEN

SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE ON SCREEN

Shakespeare’s Globe On Screen returns to cinemas this winter. This year’s selection is Henry V, Taming of the Shrew and the highly successful Twelfth Night, starring Stephen Fry and Mark Rylance.

“The three films are a very interesting contrast,” says former Globe Wardrobe Manager, Hannah Lobelson. “The costumes for Twelfth Night are what we call ‘original practices’, which is where the costumes and for that matter the music, the scenery, is all created according to the technology they had in Shakespeare’s lifetime… it’s all extremely true to the day. Whereas Henry V and Taming of the Shrew, lots of costumes are period in appearance, but they’re modern constructions, and there could indeed be Velcro hidden in them.”

Of course original practices also means men playing women. “Major challenges there. Men are still in corsets, and they have to, as much as they can, embody the spirit of woman. So quite a fascinating experience for them,” says Lobelson. (LC)
