SECRET IDENTITY

SECRET IDENTITY

Gallery Burlesque’s new superhero-themed show is quite possibly every comic book fan’s dream, with performers taking on characters like Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Thor and even The Joker.

“Superheroes dress fabulous,” says Onur Karaozbek, the show’s producer and founder of Gallery Burlesque.

“Visually, it’s over the top, you know? All these really edgy costumes and completely abnormal colours mashing into each other. At times, you look at all this characters and it screams burlesque.”

“If there was one true burlesque artist and superhero, it would be Hulk. This guy has the narrative … he gets angry, he takes off his clothes.”

Secret Identity is not Gallery Burlesque’s first foray into popular culture. Past shows have been inspired by Harry Potter and Tim Burton, with plans for a Quentin Tarantino and Alex Rodriguez- inspired show later in the year.

Karaozbek draws inspiration from his own interests as well as those of his friends. “Everyone has an obsession with something, why not play with those obsessions and have a bit of fun?”

And like Comic-Con or any other major comic book convention, dressing up is encouraged, with prizes for the best dressed.

“[There’ll be] superhero standoffs and superhero dance-offs. You watch the show but you can be a part of it as well.”
