George Street will soon be transformed into a giant pride flag in the lead up to WorldPride, the City of Sydney has announced. The road will be painted with a rainbow pride flag, with colour coordinated seating to be installed adjacent.

WorldPride, which begins in February, will see a plethora of events and celebrations come to Sydney in the first ever global pride event in the Southern Hemisphere.

“We are bringing a kaleidoscope of colour to the heart of the city as we celebrate diversity, inclusion and tolerance,” Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

George Street transformation continues

The transformation of George Street follows similar installations of pride flags in Oxford Street, which is gearing up to host many of the upcoming pride events. In October, the City of Sydney pledged an additional $300,000 towards the beautification and revitalisation of Oxford Street in preparation for the massive event.

George Street represents one of the largest pedestrianised zones in Sydney following upgrades in 2022, including the recent blocking off of cars all the way up to Circular Quay.

“George Street’s transformation from a traffic-clogged arterial route to a destination in its own right is nothing short of remarkable,” Moore said.

Council announced that works on George Street will extend into the North end, where there will be no access for vehicles between Hunter and Grosvenor streets from January 9. Intersections at Hunter, Margaret, Bond, Jamison and Dalley streets will also be closed, we well as the extension of footpaths on Margaret Street.
