Pushbike police nab car burglar

Timely information from the public and swift response by police on pushbikes led to the arrest of a Kogarah man, 43, who has been charged with breaking into several cars and premises in a crime spree in the city east.

Last Wednesday morning police were called to premises in William Street by a person who had seen a motor vehicle being broken into. A short time later a member of the public alerted police to a male breaking into another motor vehicle parked a short distance away in Rosella Lane, Darlinghurst.

The offender forced entry and stole an MP3 player and a navigation device and left the scene.  Police obtained a description of the suspect and located him in Cook and Phillip Park. The male was arrested by members of the Woolloomooloo Police Bike Unit and the items stolen from the vehicle in Rosella Lane were recovered.

Police further allege that the male was found in possession of prohibited drugs, breaking implements and items of stolen property including a quantity of electronic equipment.  Police allege that this property had been stolen from several vehicles and premises on the days prior to his arrest.

“The Kings Cross Local Area Command experienced a Steal from Motor Vehicle minor crime spike last month and it is believed that this person may be responsible for some of those offences,” said Kings Cross Crime Manager Detective Inspector Darren Schott.

The man appeared before Central Local Court the next day, was refused bail and will appear in Central Local Court on 19 February.
