POPCORN TAXI

POPCORN TAXI

BY RUSSELL EDWARDS

Sydney lacks a permanent home where hard-core cinema lovers and film makers can gather, but it does have Popcorn Taxi. Founded ten years ago and originally based at Glebe’s Valhalla, this canny, finger-on-the-pulse outfit is run by real movie pros. They regularly host sell-out events at Greater Union Bondi Junction which bring fans and big name makers together to talk seriously about their passions.

Their next biggie, a live Q&A with Brokeback Mountain’s Ang Lee and screening of his Taking Woodstock is already booked out. But not far off (July 27th) is an early screening of the incendiary and sure to be controversial Sydney drama Cedar Boys. Yep, Lebanese gangs, watch out… Writer/director Serhat Caradee will take the heat, backed up by several of the stars. Then there’s a rare chance to see Jennifer Lynch’s creepy psycho thriller Surveillance (July 29) and quiz her about why she’s trying so hard to freak us out. Her debut, amputee fantasy Boxing Helena, nearly had her run out of town!
