Police warn of fake gold scam

Police are warning Sydneysiders to be wary of any sellers offering cheap gold.

City Central Police have received several reports over the past few weeks of individuals being duped into buying fake gold ignots, some in the form of Buddahs.

The two offenders are of Asian appearance, aged in their early 30’s to mid 40’s and speak Mandarin, said Crime Manager for City Central LAC, Detective Inspector John Maricic.

“The men contact the victims at random, striking up a conversation suggesting they have friends/relatives in common,” Detective Inspector Maricic said.

“Once they gain the confidence of the victim, arrangements are then made to meet where the victim is shown the ingots. The victims are told the ingots are from century-old excavation sites and that they are being offered for a cheap price so that the men can return home to China.”

Detective Inspector Maricic said the scam artists gained further confidence by giving the victim a small but genuine sample of gold for analysis.

“Once analysed to confirm its authenticity negotiations continue. Unfortunately, the victim purchases ingots which are fake and worthless,” he
said.

“Some victims were also shown a piece of cloth which is alleged to be part of a will, which the offenders have produced to further support their claims that it has been discovered and the gold is real.”

Detective Inspector Maricic said it was important people were aware of these scams and reported them to their local police officers.

“There has been anecdotal evidence that this type of scam has stung a number of people in the community who have been embarrassed about the incident and have been reluctant to report it to police.”

He urged victims to step forward and report the offenders.

“You might be preventing someone else from being a victim of this crime. The reality is that victims are losing their hard earned savings to criminals.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
