Plans to transform George St

The City of Sydney is challenging the State Government to fulfill its promise of fixing the central city’s transport mess.

Council said it would invest $180 million to “transform” George Street if the Government delivers on light rail.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said their research illustrates that light rail down George Street would be the optimal route into the city centre.

“Everyone knows light rail is the solution to the gridlock in the city,” she said.

“We are putting our money on the table to help make it a reality and so Sydney residents, workers, visitors, businesses and tourists get the maximum benefit.”

Council’s plans include two tracks from near Eddy Avenue along George to Alfred Street in Circular Quay, with cars and buses being restricted on Bathurst and Hunter Street — with only pedestrians having access.

Ms Moore said if the city is ridded of its gridlock, the space would allow it to open up to be a commercial and entertainment precinct.

“George Street will flourish if we removed the traffic congestion currently choking it,” she said.

“We want to open up a network of vibrant lanes and small plazas that encourage shops, bars and other small businesses to thrive.”

The $180 million would go towards widening footpaths, revitalising laneways, improved street lighting, signage and landscaping,

The government welcomed Council’s announcement but said any concrete plans would have to wait until the completion of a feasibility study into extending light rail to the University of Sydney and the University of NSW.

The money for the upgrades will be set aside in Council’s long-term financial plan which will be debated next week.

If the plans are passed, they will go on public exhibition and once feedback is received, a final decision will be made.
