The People’s Choice award in the Images of the Cross photographic exhibition has gone to Chris McKeen for The Essential Animal, a portrait of the well known Kings Cross biker.

The exhibition, organised by the Kings Cross Arts Guild, was shown at the Kings Cross Library over the past month.

Chris, who lives in Potts Point, was a photojournalist in Auckland before moving here a year ago to set up a freelance practice. He used a Canon 30D camera and shot the colour picture in Joe’s Café in Victoria Street.

Prizes were sponsored by the Kings Cross Partnership as part of the Food,Wine and Arts Festival. President Adrian Bartels said the exhibition had been a great opportunity to see the Cross though the eyes of some very talented artists.

“The enthusiasm of the local community had been so encouraging that the Kings Cross Arts Guild is keen to make sure it becomes an annual event,” said curator Fiona MacDonald

“Most of the entrants were from the Kings Cross area and all provided unique and personal visions to make the show a multifaceted Image of the Cross.”

Winner of the portrait section was Luke Kelly, while Jose Sebastian Vicente won the Landscape section.
