A man is in a critical condition after being struck by a car in Surry Hills last night. NSW Police say the car hit the pedestrian before driving away and crashing into a parked car, where it then caught fire.

The blue Toyota Yaris was driving on Oxford Street at approximately 11:30pm past night when it turned into Wentworth Avenue and hit the 33-year-old man at a pedestrian crossing.

After hitting the pedestrian, the car continued on on Wentworth Avenue before crashing into a parked SUV and catching fire.

Victim sustains head injuries and possible fractured skull

When the NSW police arrived at the scene the driver has already left.

NSW ambulance paramedics treated the 33-year-old pedestrian at the scene and took him to St Vincent’s Hospital.

He was admitted with head injuries and a possible fractured skull. The victim is in serious condition but has been stabilising throughout the night.

After being closed for several hours, Wentworth Avenue has reopened as of this morning.
