Partnership gets Downe to business

Adrian Bartels was re-elected unopposed as Chairman of the Potts Point and Kings Cross Partnership at its recent AGM, which was attended by local business owners along with community and Council representatives including Greens Councillor Irene Doutney.

Mr Bartels said the Partnership would seek common ground between different sides of the debate about Kings Cross as a late-night entertainment precinct, and continue to promote and improve the district for businesses and residents.

“Most of us live here as well as work here so we understand both sides of the coin,” he said.

The business association elected a new Board at the meeting, which was followed by a Christmas party at the Sugarmill Hotel featuring local comedian Bob Downe whose improvised act cracked up the crowd with gags and songs peppered with local references.

Housing prices to rise

Westpac’s chief economist Bill Evans spoke at a business breakfast in November organised  by the Partnership at Club Swans. He told the 85-strong crowd that housing prices would probably rise another 10 per cent in the coming year given that 60,000 people per year were settling in Sydney and not enough new homes were being built. He said developers faced not only a credit squeeze due to global financial problems but also high government charges on property which he blamed on efforts to offset the cost of the Olympics.

He predicted equity markets would also rise but tipped  property over shares for investors in the current climate.
