NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND

Through a mixture of talent, good training and good discipline, Blue Mountains violinist Daniel Weltlinger has become an internationally recognized performer and composer.

Equally, though a mixture of good fortune and good nature, he has also become a de facto member of one of Europe’s most prominent musical dynasties: the Reinhardts.

For some years now, Mr Weltlinger has been part of the touring ensemble of German-born guitar maestro Lulo Reinhardt (a recent visitor to Sydney and The Basement). His current project, however, concerns Lulo’s great uncle, the late, famous Gypsy-jazz wizard Django Reinhardt.

Last year, with the approval of the Reinhardt clan, he was commissioned to produce an album of works by Django. Such is the esteem in which both the original composer and his present interpreter are held, the project has been bank-rolled by the prestigious Paris-based merchant bank, BNP Paribas.

The album, freshly minted, is called Souvenirs, and receives its world premiere at The Basement on Thursday, September 8. Aided by a fine collection of jazz sidemen, and supported by Sydney New Orleans swing band, The Cope Street Parade, Mr Weltlinger is set to show this city what much of Europe already knows – that he is one hell of a musician.

We have four double passes to the event to give away. To score one, phone The Basement box office on 9251 2797 during office hours.

Great jazz performers, of course, have to start somewhere, and for many in Sydney that place is Surrey Hills – whereat can be found the world renowned JMC Academy.

Over the years, JMC has funneled many a youthful talent through its rehearsal rooms, and on Monday, August 29, The Basement hosts some deeply funky performances by the institution’s next crop of rising stars.

Two bands from the JMC Academy will combine to prove a huge night aspirational excellence. The 15-member JMC Jazz-Funk Ensemble will rock the house with arrangements of Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau and many more. The JMC Jazz Fusion Band hit hard with numbers from Robben Ford, Steely Dan and other noodle-meisters.

We have four double passes to the event to give away. To score one, phone The Basement box office on 9251 2797 during office hours.
