NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND

Until such time as some inquisitive biologist (frustrated, perhaps, because he always really wanted to be a sax player) goes combing the genome for the answer, the question of whether musical talent is acquired or inherited will remain open.

Certainly, musicianship often runs in families – a finding that could support either contention. Whatever the reason for familial talent-sharing, the results are always entertaining. On Wednesday, September 14, for instance, The Basement is proud to present exciting, soulful and downright funky father-and-son team, Maurice and Aaron D’Abruzzo.

Newcastle-raised Maurice, the elder D’Abruzzo, spent much of the eighties gigging round the circuit, then switched successfully to soundtrack production in the nineties, before heading back into band work.

Son Aaron, after a peculiar start as a child model for swimwear in Japan, joined his father on stage once his HSC duties had been fulfilled.

For their Basement show, the D’Abruzzos will be backed up by two members of another prominent Sydney musical dynasty –  brothers Fenix and Dauno Martinez. The group will be completed by Paul Wheeler, who used to drum for Icehouse. Quality all the way, therefore.

Family of different kind – soul, rather than blood – informs another Basement show, this time on Wednesday, September 21, when best mates (and keyboard genii) Sean MacKenzie and Noel Elmowy team up for a night of funky, jazzy, groove stuff.

Noel was worked and recorded extensively in Australia and England – cutting his teeth years back with the great Dizzy Gillespie. Sean often collaborates with Lulo Reinhardt, and has recorded in Holland and Japan, as well as Australia.

Messrs Elmowy and MacKenzie will be joined by a stellar cast of special guests, including frequent James Morrison collaborator Evelyn Duprai and ex-Chicago soul man Doug Williams.
