NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND

Well, the end of the year is approaching and with it, in line with tradition, comes a wide variety of movies, gigs and tele specials all pitched, more or less gratuitously, at the idea of Christmas.

The Basement, traditional to the core, has several shows coming up during December featuring direct reference to matters Yule. They range from gentle to rowdy, from carols to cabaret.

On the quietish side of the ledger is an event called Away In A Basement, presented by Australia’s finest a capella quartet, The Idea Of North. The show, on Thursday, December 15, will feature much of the group’s beloved repertoire, spiced throughout by Chrissie tunes.

The Idea of North’s Sally Cameron returns to the venue on December 21 to take part in a great cabaret showcase called A New York Christmas, put together by visiting NY cabaret singer David Raleigh. Also taking part in the show will be cast members from Jersey Boys, David Campbell and many other stage luminaries.

Those after an altogether rockier Chrissie show have two mouthwatering choices. On December 8, the amazing folk-rock band Bluehouse will shake the walls of the Basement its own no-doubt fast and funny Christmas Party.

Those after a touch of wide-boy action to mark the end of the year should check out popular Sydney ska band, The My Tys, who will be kicking up the chugging guitars and honking brass in a dance-heavy Xmas Skank-Out on December 23.

And, just the day before, the fabulous Martinez Brothers will turn the venue into a southern US church for an uplifting (and deeply funky) show called Gospel Love, starring Darryl Beaton, The D1 Cartel and a host of special guests.

We have four double passes to give away to every one of these events (my heavens, we’re generous). To score one, simply call The Basement box office on 9251 2797 during office hours.
