Redfern Police kill alleged thief

The NSW Police Force is again in damage control mode over a death, with police in Redfern shooting a man dead. Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch said a “critical incident investigation” was being held into the fatal shooting of the man, who was allegedly driving a stolen truck at the time. ‘‘Policing is an inherently dangerous occupation and police confront those dangers everyday and make split second decisions,’’ he said. The deceased man, who has not been named, was allegedly driving erratically, struck two pedestrians and crashed into Railz Hotel. The order of events will be determined by the State Coroner.

Cop charged with Surry Hills assault

An off-duty police officer been charged with bashing a member of the public in Surry Hills. A special constable, who has not been named, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intimidation after allegedly bashing a 30-year-old man in Bourke Street shortly before 7.30pm on Sunday, November 25. Security guards from the Beresford Hotel detained the constable, who was arrested after members of the public called Triple-0. The 38-year-old officer was granted bail and will appear in court on January 9. The NSW Police Media Unit could not confirm whether the officer has been suspended from duties.

Pyrmont Christmas celebration

The annual Pyrmont Community Christmas Celebration will be held this Sunday, December 2, raising money for charity and bestowing Christmas cheer on local residents. The event will feature performances by internationally acclaimed ABBA tribute band, FABBA, and the 50-piece Northside Concert Band. Elizabeth Elenius, member of the organising committee, said she expected thousands of dollars to be raised for charity. “In the past five years alone, [this event] has raised over $120,000 for the benefit of The Salvation Army, The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation and several local charities,” she said. The celebration will be held at Refinery Square, Bowman Street from 4.30pm or inside at Pyrmont Community Centre, John Street in the event of wet weather.
