Cockle Bay boardwalk revamp

The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority (SHFA) has announced the first major upgrade to the Cockle Bay boardwalk since its creation more than 20 years ago. SHFA CEO Catherine Gallagher said the $3.6 million project would revitalise one of Darling Harbour’s most popular features. “We are renewing the boardwalk’s timber and steel structures following our successful redevelopment of Darling Quarter and before construction starts nearby on Australia’s largest convention, exhibition and entertainment facilities,” Ms Gallagher said. The program of repair and replacement will commence this month and is expected to be complete by October next year.

Keep Australia Beautiful

The annual Keep Australia Beautiful Week will kick off this Monday, August 19, encouraging Australians not to litter. Lara Shannon, Keep Australia Beautiful Week Campaign Manager, said the week was a timely reminder of the costs of littering and the fact that it was an issue everyone can help resolve. “Out of all of the environmental issues we currently face, litter is the one problem we can all take personal action on to make an immediate difference,” said Ms Shannon. “Reducing litter is not just about making our public places look better. It helps protect wildlife, reduce public health and safety issues and has a financial impact.”

Florence Broadhurst celebration

The iconic late Sydney artist and wallpaper queen Florence Broadhurst will be celebrated in Sydney’s CBD next month, at the 28th annual David Jones Flower Show. The show, which runs from September 5 to 15 and marks the beginning of spring, will recreate the famous designs of Ms Broadhurst through more than 300,000 flowers. “The event is always a calendar favourite for our customers and we are thrilled to be presenting them such an exciting and vibrant concept which honors the long time association between David Jones and Florence Broadhurst,” said David Jones Group Executive of Operations, Cate Daniels. Ms Broadhurst staged her first exhibition at David Jones in 1954.
