Slash your power bills

Residents of high-rise buildings can slash power bills by up to 30 per cent under a new program which helps apartment owners and their managers improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. ‘Smart Blocks’ provides a step-by-step guide for owners’ corporations to reduce energy bills spent on common facilities such as lighting and swimming pools. The program is being developed by the City of Sydney Council, the City of Melbourne and various strata bodies. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said: “With more and more residents living in apartments, we need to explain how using energy more efficiently can make it easier on their wallets and on the environment.”

Leichhardt going renewable

Leichhardt’s Greens Councillors have committed Leichhardt Municipal Council to becoming 100 per cent renewable by 2025. The commitment, made at last week’s Climate Change Taskforce, follows a previous Greens election commitment. “Last year, Leichhardt Council fulfilled a Greens 2008 election commitment by becoming carbon neutral. We’re now building on that commitment by setting this new target to go 100 per cent renewable through direct investment in renewable energy, without needing to purchase offsets,” said Leichhardt Greens Councillor Daniel Kogoy.
