Bondi Beach stormwater harvesting

The Waverley Municipal Council has successfully secured a grant of $465,000 from the NSW Office of Water to construct a stormwater harvesting and re-use scheme at Bondi Beach. The project, set to save 50 million litres of drinking water annually, will divert stormwater currently discharged at the southern end of Bondi Beach to irrigation in Bondi Park and for use in nearby public toilets. “This is a wonderful project that will enable Council to use water that would otherwise go to waste, and will also be beneficial towards improving water quality at the beach,” said Waverley Mayor Sally Betts.

Computer giant ‘appy’ with Food Truck Finder

The City of Sydney Council’s smartphone application which connects Sydneysiders to food trucks has been officially recognised by global computer and communications giant, Apple. The Sydney Food Trucks App has made Apple iTunes editors’ Best of 2012 list in the ‘Disruptive Services’ category. Apple said the app was among those “helping to reshape and redefine industries”. Available for iPhone and Android users at sydneyfoodtrucks.com.au, the app has been downloaded more than 23,000 times since September, and has approximately 600 active users per day. “With a swipe of a finger, anyone with our app can look up which trucks are serving and exactly where they are – it even calculates distance and time, so you can plan your walk or public transport journey,” said Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
