Ita thinking of butting heads with Clover over mayorship

Former CLEO and Daily Telegraph editor Ita Buttrose is considering going up against Clover Moore in the next election for City of Sydney council.

“All I can tell you is that it has been suggested … but I haven’t made up my mind,” Ms Buttrose told the Seven Network last week.

Ms Buttrose, who was born in Potts Point, has hinted at backing from an Eastern Suburbs business rather than any political party.

If she runs for the position of Mayor she will have to better Clover Moore who has been in office since 2004.

City hands out 2030 free trees.

City of Sydney Council handed out 2030 trees to residents last week in an effort to encourage greening the city.

The trees hand out at Martin’s Place and Customs House comes just before the release of the City’s State of the City 2011 Report as part of the Sustainable Sydney Project.

“Cities are the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, and the City has set ambitious targets to reduce our emissions by 70% by 2030,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP

“More trees and greenery in our gardens, backyards, streets and parks will help us get there and this giveaway is part of inviting people to join us.”

The free-tree handout included Banksias, Tea trees, Wattles, Bottlebrush and Eucalypts.

“We hope these free seedlings will inspire residents, businesses and visitors to plant them and help us create a greener future,” Ms Moore said.

Ms Moore said the when the trees are planted they will cool their surroundings by six degrees and will help reduce electricity bills and pollution.

“By 2030 the number of homes in the inner city and surrounding villages is expected to increase and in an increasingly urban environment these green spaces help reduce pollution and allow people to connect with nature,” said the City’s chief arborist Karen Sweeney.
