E-waste recycling spree

Sydney residents recycled 14 tonnes of electronic waste on Sunday’s e-waste collection day.

The City of Sydney of Council has been facilitating e-waste collection since November and Sunday’s collection was the largest yet.

“We congratulate the hundreds of Sydneysiders who participated in our e-waste collections this weekend, turning out on foot, by bike and by car,” said City of Sydney Acting CEO Garry Harding.

“Australians generate over 140,000 tonnes of e-waste every year and most of this ends up in landfill, leaching toxic chemicals into our soils and waterways – so we’re proud to provide residents with a safe and sustainable way to recycle their old TVs and computers.”

City of Sydney has been hosting e-waste collection days every few months since November 2008 and remains one of the few councils to provide this service.

Over 400 households contributed to Sunday’s collection, recycling items like an electronic Japanese toilet seat and an original 1970s Polaroid camera. Hundreds of old TVs, computers and mobile phones were also recycled.

According to the Federal Government electronic waste grows more than three times faster than any other kind of waste.

The next e-waste collection at the City’s Bay Street Depot is on Sunday, 11 September from 9am – 3pm.

E-waste you can bring to recycle: televisions, computer desktops, monitors, laptops, joysticks, printers, photocopiers, fax machines, scanners, DVD players, video recorders, electronic games, CDs, DVDs, tapes, cameras, mobile phones and household batteries.

Smart Lights for Pitt Street Mall

Energy-efficient LED smart lights will be installed on Pitt Street mall as part of the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 project.

The technology allows the LEDs to only light up when there is not enough light coming from nearby buildings.

The lights will have a decorative glow and will be able to change colour for special occasions.

“The lighting is the finishing touch to the City’s major upgrade to Pitt Street Mall which has helped reinvigorate this great retail precinct as the number one shopping destination in Australia,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

“More than 65,000 people use Pitt Street Mall every day – it’s our busiest and most prestigious shopping strip and the retail heartland of our global city.”
