Woman tied up during hotel robbery – Sydney CBDTown Hall goes supercalifragilistic for Mary Poppins musical

Sydney’s Town Hall was transformed into a magical scene from Mary Poppins to launch the world famous musical opening at Capitol Theatre this week.

The rooftops of London were projected onto Town Hall on Thursday 5 May for the opening night party, with the clock tower becoming Mary Poppins’ magical umbrella. The projections will be repeated until Sunday 8 May, organised by Disney and Events NSW on behalf of the NSW Government.

“Mary Poppins is already an international hit – we’re welcoming the spectacular production and its all-Australian cast to Sydney with a little Mary Poppins magic,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

“Major musical theatre and cultural events like Mary Poppins contribute significantly to local businesses as theatre goers dine before the show or have a drink afterwards, and tourists visit from interstate and overseas for the Sydney experience.”

The Mary Poppins book was first published in 1934 and Walt Disney produced the film classic in 1964. The musical debuted in 2004 and is based on both the book and the movie. It has toured England and London’s West End, continues to play New York’s Broadway and tour the United States.
