Come play at Prince Alfred

Sydney’s newest children’s playground is now open in the stunning, refurbished Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills, just minutes from the heart of the city.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said the $9 million facelift has transformed the almost 150 year old park into a new green urban oasis.

“Children will fall in love with a giant balloon that highlights the story of Thomas Gale’s infamous balloon ride from Prince Alfred Park to Redfern in September 1870,” said the Lord Mayor.

Prince Alfred Park was established in 1865 and named after Queen Victoria’s second son when he visited Sydney soon after – and the innovative new playground is full of stories and references to the park’s history.

There is a dinghy named after the Galatea, the sailing ship that brought Prince Alfred to Australia in 1867.

“Parks and other open public spaces are so important for people who live and work in the city – and making these places fun, friendly and sustainable is a key part of our long term planning,” said the Lord Mayor.

“Please join me in celebrating and just enjoying being in the park, when we launch the first stage on Saturday, April 30th.”
