Sydney pledges support for QLD flood disaster

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP has pledged $200,000 to support victims of the devastating floods Queensland.

“We sent strong support and practical help, and I have recommended the City give a donation of $200,000 to the Queensland Premier’s Disaster relief appeal, given the scale of he crisis,” Ms Moore said.

The proposal will be considered at a Council meeting on January 31.

NYE Photo Competition Winner announced

Chaiwat Leelakajonki has won the City of Sydney’s NYE photo competition for her photo taken at Mosman Bay.

She has won a one-day photography course, $200 JB HI FI voucher and two VIP tickets to the 2011 NYE viewing area at Dawes Point.

Energy efficient lights installed to reduce emissions and bills

850 Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights have been installed at the Goulburn Street Car park in the city to help reduce greenhouse emissions and energy bills.

“The Goulburn Street Car Park isn’t one of Sydney’s most attractive buildings but the new LED lights make it one of the greenest,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said.

The City is also conducting energy efficient lighting trials including a trial of LED street lights at Martin Place, Circular Quay, Darlinghurst Road, and Alexandria Park.

A trial of 50 metal halide lamps are also being trialed at Bourke Street in Surry Hills.

Teen charged with drug-related offence

A teenager will face court next month after allegedly being found in possession of ecstasy tablets.

Police arrested the teenager last week (January 14) after he was seen acting suspiciously on George Street,

The teen was taken to City Central Police Station where he was charged with supplying a prohibited drug – indictable quantity.

He was given conditional bail to appear at Bidura Children’s Court on February 21.

Funding for community organisations welcomed

Last week Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Frank Sartor, announced funding for four community organisations to help improve their water and energy efficiency.

City of Sydney RSL and Community Club will be given $40,000 to refit their current lighting system.

Other Sydney organisations receiving funding under the Community Savers program include the Grosvenor Club, Wesley Mission (Pitt Street office), and Anglican Retirement Villiages, Elizabeth Lodge.

Men charged following protest in Newtown

Seven men have been charged following a protest at Newtown last Sunday.

Newtown police attended the vicinity of Station Street and Enmore Road to monitor an unplanned protest just before 2pm.

At 2.30pm, an unidentified female allegedly threw paint at a wall before running from the scene. The crowd turned on police when they went to arrest a 29-year-old man who had also allegedly thrown paint at the wall.

More police attended the scene and seven men were arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station while the remainder of the protesters were moved-on towards Enmore Road.
