Family farewells tragic victim of beating

The family of Wilson Duque Castillo said farewell last Friday.

Mr Castillo’s life support was switched off last Monday after he sustained injuries in an incident in King Cross on December 18.

The funeral at the Eastern Suburbs Crematorium in Matraville was attended by the media from Channel Ten, The Daily Telegraph and AAP.

Police are yet to charge anyone with the death of Mr Castillo and are searching for witnesses to the incident which took place on Bayswater road.

Teen arrested after rock throwing incident

Police charged a teenager following a rock throwing incident in St Peters on Sunday.

The 16-year-old boy was charged with intentionally throwing an object at a train, entering a rail corridor and breach of bail after he allegedly threw a rock at a train which had stopped at the St Peters railway station.

While no one was injured as a result of the incident, the rock hit a glass door causing it to shatter.

Sydney Festival dazzles on opening night

The 2011 Sydney Festival launched on Saturday night as the heart of the city came alive with music, dance, movies and cabaret.

Eight sites across the city and surrounds including Hyde Park and surrounds, Martin Place, the Domain and Chifley Square played host to a range of performers.

The night began at 3pm with an afternoon and early evening program oriented towards children and families and continued into the night with music and vaudeville style entertainment at the eight venues.

The Sydney Festival, supported through the City’s Major Festivals program, continues until Sunday 30 January.

Appeal for public assistance after attempted sexual assault in Redfern

Police are appealing for public assistance after a man allegedly attempted to sexually assault a woman on Sunday morning.

Shortly before 3am a 34-year-old woman was walking south along Elizabeth Street, Redfern, when she was approached by man at the intersection of Cleveland Street.

The man followed the woman to a grassed area near a walkway leading to Kettle Lane before allegedly grabbing her from behind, pushing her to the ground and attempting to choke and sexually assault her.

The alleged attacker then fled on foot south along Elizabeth Street after the woman’s cries alerted a man from a nearby complex.

The attacker is described as being South American in appearance, aged about 30, medium build, tanned complexion, with short black hair and a strong South American accent. He was wearing a red t-shirt with horizontal blue stripes and blue jeans.

Investigators would also like to speak to the man who disturbed the attack and came to the woman’s aid as he may have vital information which could assist with the investigation.
