Herpes breakthrough

University of Sydney researchers have made a major breakthrough towards a Herpes vaccine. Fluorescent viruses were used on mice to study how the virus affects immune cells after entering the skin. The Herpes Simplex Virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, serious brain disease and newborn infections.


Chippendale’s new pocket park

A new ‘pocket park’ will open in Chippendale on Saturday. Located at the south-west corner of the former Carlton United Brewery site, the small Balfour Street Park will provide a gateway to a planned 6,500 square-metre park. The pocket park will link into a pedestrian and cycle connection to Broadway.


Soccer-boos

More than 10,000 fans went to Darling Harbour to watch the Socceroos lose to Germany before sunrise on Monday. Thousands of fans were aggravated when fenced back from the main site, with police and security concerned about people falling into the water. Sydney is one of six official FIFA fan sites, along with Berlin, Mexico City, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Rome.


Enmore pedestrian hit by car

A 33-year-old man was hit by a car on Enmore Road, Enmore, on Friday night. Police think the man stepped into the path of the car, driven by a 57-year-old woman. The victim was thrown across the bonnet and knocked unconscious. He is in hospital in a critical condition requiring surgery. The driver was taken for mandatory blood and urine tests.


Operation: drunk blunder

Police have charged two men who impersonated police officers to get into a pub on Saturday night. The men were refused entry due to intoxication, whereupon they produced a police notebook, claiming to be undercover officers conducting an operation. Hotel management contacted the police, who arrested the Queensland men, aged 19 and 20.
