Guard killed in attempted CBD robbery

Fifty-nine-year-old Chubb Security armed guard Gary Allibon was shot and killed in an attempted robbery in the CBD on Monday. Three men in balaclavas and hoodies exited a silver Audi outside a Sussex Street hotel, one holding a handgun, and approached three guards in an armoured vehicle. Allibon died in hospital.


ATM card skimming arrests

Police arrested two men in Darlinghurst for ATM card skimming on Saturday. The men, aged 23 and 28, are accused of skimming at a Wahroonga bank on December 19. Police have seized $47,250 and €60,000 cash from a Maroubra unit.


Opera House tune-up

The Opera House will receive a $152 million upgrade, its biggest ever. Works include an underground tunnel and a new lift for theatre scenery.


Payback time

A number of underpaid inner-Sydney workers have received a combined back-payment of $168,000. Employers paid the sums after being contacted from the Fair Work Ombudsman, who said employers were compliant and no prosecutions were made. The biggest single payment was $64,000 to a Surry Hills sales manager. A Marrickville journalist was back-paid $14,400 after being paid less than minimum wage.


Uncommon housing in Camperdown

The controversial Common Ground building on Bridge Road, Camperdown, has been approved. The project will house and offer services to homeless people. Many nearby residents criticise the plan, which removes four housing commission terraces. The project is based on a New York supportive housing project.


Saving Nemo

The National Parks Association of NSW and Nature Conservation Council of NSW are calling for the creation of a Sydney Marine Park to protect unique local marine life. They say it would be the world only marine park based around a major city.
