Police and fire vehicles responded to a burning four wheel drive on the corner of Missenden and University Roads in Newtown on Friday. Police and fire officers at the scene did not comment on the nature of the fire or if the vehicle had been abandoned.

Clover looks to Power up farming

The old Power House museum car park and Sydney Park in St Peters will be considered by Council as sites for new City Farms.

A City Farm Feasibility Study, commissioned by Council, recommends the sites as the hub for a City Farm.

The study suggests a farm incorporating orchards, market gardens, small animals and environmental initiatives.

If Council endorses the study on Monday, it will be placed on public exhibition until 25 February 2011.

Big Aussie Swap wins big Aussie award

The Big Aussie Swap has won the Local Government Excellence in Environment Award for waste avoidance.

A joint initiative by the City and Planet Ark the Big Aussie Swap first took place during National Recycling Week in 2008.

Since the first swap party, the City and Planet Ark have worked together and in 2010 over 50 local councils across Australia hosted their own swap parties, attracting 3,224 participants.

The Cooks River Sustainability Initiative also won an award for OurRiver in the Natural Environment Policies, Planning and Decision Making category.

Police investigate stabbing

Police are conducting investigations into the stabbing of a man following an altercation at a hotel in St Peters early Sunday morning.

Police and paramedics were called to the Princes Highway at 1am after a man was stabbed during a fight.

It is believed a number of men were drinking at a hotel on the corner of the Princes Highway and Canal Road when they were ejected by security following an altercation inside the premises.

A short time later a 23-year-old man left the hotel and was walking along the highway when he became involved in an argument with another man and was stabbed once to the abdomen.

Newtown Police are conducting investigations into the incident and attempting to identify and locate the man responsible for the attack.

Seven injured in boat crash – Pyrmont Bay

Seven people have been injured after a pleasure boat crashed into a several moored boats and the wharf at Pyrmont Bay on Sunday night.

About 11:45pm, police and NSW Ambulance Paramedics were called to the Pyrmont Bay Marina at Pyrmont Bay after a party boat crashed into several moored boats.

The boat sustained extensive damage after crashing into several moored boats before impacting with heavily with the wharf.

At the time of the incident the boat was carrying 39 passengers and four crew members.

Seven of the passengers were treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Royal Prince Alfred and St Vincents Hospitals.

The most serious injuries were sustained to a man with suspected spinal and neck injuries while the other injured parties sustained suspected broken arms/ribs, concussion and abrasions.

Investigations into the incident are continuing and will be conducted by NSW Maritime, however, early indications suggest the boat may have suffered mechanical failure prior to the crash.
