Olympic flame to light up Town Hall

Images of Cathy Freeman holding the Olympic torch and Paralympian Louise Savage winning gold will be among those projected onto Town Hall to mark the tenth anniversary of the Sydney Olympic Games. The Olympic cauldron will feature on the Town Hall steps, and flags and banners of the games will line streets. The celebrations will also include a memorabilia exhibition, video, talks and reference materials.


Kings Cross hotel shoot up

Three shots were fired into a Kings Cross hotel just before 4am Sunday. Police say the man seen firing the shots met with two men afterward and headed north along Darlinghurst Road. Two of the men are described as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance and between 25 and 30 years old.


Crack team dismisses neck manipulation

Neck manipulation is not worth the risk, found a University of Sydney study. Project lead Dr Andrew Leaver said the common chiropractic, osteopathic and physiotherapeutic ‘thrust and click’ treatment risked causing stroke and was no more effective than milder treatments.


Council plugs new Mitsubishi

The City of Sydney has acquired one of Australia’s first production electric vehicles. The i-MiEV is one of 40 leased by Mitsubishi to government departments, councils and companies around Australia ahead of its release next year. The car will be exclusively powered by the 240 solar panels on Town Hall. Charging will take less than eight hours from a power point in a Kent Street carpark. The City has pledged to reduce its emissions by 20 percent by 2014.


Employee stabbed defending clothes shop

A man appeared in court on Saturday charged with stabbing another man in a raid on an Alexandria clothes shop. The previous Monday the accused was said to have demanded cash from the shop. The 34-year-old employee attempted to chase the offender out, when a scuffle took place and the offender stabbed the employee multiple times in the chest and arm. The victim collapsed and the offender fled with cash. Paramedics took the victim to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for emergency treatment.
