Bank Hotel fire

Firefighers extinguished an electrical fire in the basement of Newtown’s Bank Hotel on King St on Friday afternoon. About 35 firefighters were called out, and police closed the street to traffic.

Strife-pole

Council expects legal fees to exceed budget by $2.6 million this financial year due to the City suing over ownership of the Smartpole design. The multifunction street pole was developed for the City as part of a street upgrade in preparation for the 2000 Olympics.

Police confiscate samurai sword

Police arrested two men and a woman after a raid on a unit on Burke St, Waterloo, last Tuesday. One of the men allegedly had a small samurai sword hidden in his pants. Officers confiscated 240 ecstasy tablets, 180 amphetamine capsules, quantities of ‘ice’ and GHB, a fake driver’s licence, laptops and stolen postal items.

Shake, howl and roll

A 20 minute ‘concert for dogs’ played at the Opera House Forecourt on Saturday morning, composed by Vivid Live curator Laurie Anderson. Music was performed at high, dog-pitches, as well as standard pitches for the human ear. Dog reactions were mixed. The area was partitioned to accommodate small, medium and large canines.

City renews energy

Council has ditched GreenPower and unanimously voted to invest in implementing mechanisms for renewable energy, such as solar panels. Its target is 25 per cent renewable energy in the City by 2030.

Festival for the homeless

Town Hall opened its doors to about (????) homeless on Tuesday, providing food, health checks, clothes, haircuts, showers, pet care, phone services, internet access, music and entertainment. Sixty government agencies and more than 300 volunteers were involved. The Homeless Connect program started in San Francisco in 2004.
