Being the newest Woolworth acquisition, even if it was a Thomas Dux branded store, probably wasn’t going to work out well for the “grand old lady of organics” as Jodie Stewart affectionately dubs her second About Life store. The Macro store she’s saving first launched an astounding twenty two years ago. Woe betide anyone who heralded organics as a fad. But this is all last month’s news. Eschewing straight reportage, I thought I would wait until the dust settled and then go and see the changes in store first hand.

My first sigh of relief came as I saw the staff – Stewart took on all the existing Macro staff. She has stuck one of her Rozelle managers in charge to assist in bringing over the flavour of About Life. A keen nutritionist, the lass has also taken up surfing with a vengeance and plans to move into the area. She got me interested in an alternative sweetener – Dark Agave Syrup ($6.99/250ml). Made from a cactus (so perfect for vegans) it also boasts a low Glycemic index and is diabetic friendly. Agave is used in the imported OrganicVille Organic Ketchup. It’s not loaded with sugar like most conventional ketchups, and in a side by side comparison taste test it won hands down on flavour. The food miles of course aren’t awesome, but we all need treats.

Bondi residents can also look forward to being well catered for in the pre-made meal department. I am usually a stickler for making my own marinades. All that changed when I took home Moroccan Chicken Thighs ($19.42/ 0.918 kg) and a Rosemary and Garlic Lamb Roast ($18.52/ 0.788kg). It really was great quality, tasty meat with excellent flavours particularly the chicken which was set off by a bit of char from our barbeque. They may have a convert.

This weekend is a great time for you to try their range. All their hormone free meats spiced up with About Life marinades like garlic and lemon chicken breasts or rosemary and thyme lamb cutlets are available for ten dollars (usually priced at $16-$18). You can also get their nutritious ‘heat and eat’ meals which include Asian Chicken Hot Pot or Potato and Cauliflower Curry at five bucks (normally $8). If I lived in Bondi I’d be thanking my lucky stars – while I sipped on a Toby’s Estate Coffee of course. Sometimes the good guys win.
