NAIDOC Week 2008 in the city

For many members of the Australian Indigenous community, NAIDOC Week is a time to reflect on, and celebrate, the Aboriginal culture ‘ whether you’re indigenous or not. And there are plenty of events happening around the inner-city next week in Sydney.

After The Apology

The forum will include first hand accounts from members of the Stolen Generation and local community workers, as well as interactive workshops.

NAIDOC Launch 2008 ‘ Film Screening and Community BBQ
6 July 2.00pm – 6.00pm
Outdoor BBQ from 2pm; Indoor film screening of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander short films in partnership with Blackscreens Australia AFC from 4pm; Basketball and kids activities; Aboriginal performers and live entertainment.
Venue: Peter Forsythe Auditorium. Cnr Franklin, Glebe Point Road and Grose Street, Glebe.

7 July

March from Redfern Park to Pemulwuy Park, Redfern, 10am – 11am.
Flag Raising Ceremony at Pemulwuy Park, 11:00am – 12:30pm.
BBQ at Redfern Community Centre, 29 Hugo Street Redfern, 12:30pm onwards.

NAIDOC Week Storytime with with Adam Hill
8 July, 10.00am – 11.00am

Attend a special storytime and craft activity for primary school – aged children with local identity and artist Adam Hill.

Aboriginal Art: Meaning and Symbolism with Adam Hill
10 July, 6.30pm

Local artist and storyteller, Adam Hill, will explore the meaning and symbolism of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art.

NAIDOC Family, Sports & Market Day
11 July, 10.00am – 4.00pm

Mini festival showcasing Aboriginal performers, artists, free BBQ, sporting personalities and the ever popular Redfern Market Day.
Venue: Alexandria Park, Buckland Street Alexandria.

Woolloomooloo Family Day
12 July, 10.00am – 3.00pm

Entertainment and activities including boomerang painting, a didgeridoo and artefacts workshop, live music, kids’ activities, free BBQ and more.
Venue: Forbes St Reserve (between Nicholson and Best Streets).
