MOVIE: DAYBREAKERS

Reality bites hard for Ethan Hawke in Daybreakers, the latest vampire flick to grace the big screen, written and directed by Australia’s very own Spierig brothers. Set in the distant future of 2017 where the majority of the world’s population have become vampires, humans have become an endangered species and blood shortages are causing universal panic. Enter reluctant vampire Edward Dalton (Hawke), who teams up with a band of insurgent humans (led by Claudia Karvan and Willem Dafoe) in a desperate attempt to find a cure for vampireness. Though the plot leaves something to be desired and the film is smattered with unnecessary gore, it is at least refreshing to see vampires with the decency to burn in direct sunlight. (ABr)
