MOVIE: 500 DAYS OF SUMMER

MOVIE: 500 DAYS OF SUMMER

Peppered with retro tunes, pop-cultural references and a backdrop of trendy record stores and karaoke bars, this Sundance hit will doubtless have scores scrambling to mimic Deschanel’s 1960s haircut while downloading the indie soundtrack in a manic frenzy. But fear not, Marc Webb’s directorial debut is definitely too clever for your standard hipster fare – it’s much more Annie Hall than Garden State. It’s a colourful collage tracing 500 days of a doomed office romance between indie darlings Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and free-spirit Summer (Zooey Deschanel). Sharp editing, witty quips and non-linear narration make for a delightful film which so acutely captures the torment of having your heart stabbed out with a vintage hairpin and manages to make it fun.
