Moore resigns over Barangaroo ‘railroad’

Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore has resigned from her position on the board of the Barangaroo Delivery Authority.

Cr Moore’s decision to resign comes after months of pressure from protestors, community members and fellow City of Sydney councillors who are concerned her position is a conflict of interest and call for her to publicly oppose the development.

Cr Moore has held the position since March last year and has defended it repeatedly saying she was working to champion the needs of the community from ‘inside the tent’.

Her resignation shows she has now decided this goal is unachievable and suggests she will now join other councillors in opposing the development.

An extract of the letter published in the Sydney Morning Herald reads “I reiterate to you that I believe the public is being railroaded on this project. The significance, scale and complexity of Barangaroo demand a considered and careful planning process, yet the Barangaroo Delivery Authority seems driven by external control and rushed timetables.”

The chairman of the BDA thanked the Lord Mayor for her contribution to the board but stated “as regretful as her decision may be, the Authority and all the other Board members unanimously reject her assertions about transparency and public consultation.”

The development has put a wedge in the Lord Mayor’s Independent Team with Cr Marcelle Hoff breaking rank last week to take the position of Deputy Lord Mayor without the Lord Mayor’s endorsement.
