Moore Money

Just this month, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore named four community-based recipients of $65,000 in grants from her Lord Mayoral Salary Trust.
Glebe Youth Services received $10,000 to assist with indigenous cultural programs. Darlinghurst’s Gorman House was awarded $20,000 to help fund full-time drug and alcohol detoxification services.
“I have long pushed for better drug treatment services, but the Government has failed to provide adequate programs to help people get off drugs,” Ms Moore said. ‘Gorman House does excellent work to help people get off drugs and get their lives back together.”
This is the third mayoral grant for Gorman, and for the second time the grant will also enable two Robert Riley Scholarships to the value of $5,000 each. These scholarships are specifically intended to enable promising Aboriginal students of law, human rights, child protection and criminal justice to continue their studies.
The final recipient was Monika’s Doggie Rescue. Thanks to the donation of $25,000, Doggie Rescue have acquired a demountable building for use in training and accommodation at their Doggiewood facility near Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The expanded quarters will enable disadvantaged youth and adults to take part in carer-training programs, as well as functioning as an adoption centre.
‘Above all, we expect happier clients and dogs, because they will be dealt with in an increasingly professional manner in a building that will be purpose designed for dog adoptions,’ said Monika. ‘This will in turn lead to more successful adoptions for the thousands of dogs rescued by DoggieRescue.com. This will then mean fewer dogs destroyed in Sydney pounds.
This latest round of grants brings the total donations from the Lord Mayoral Salary Trust thus far to $470,000.
