Moore dismisses enrolment claims

The City of Sydney Council and Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP have rejected claims they impeded businesses from enrolling for upcoming Council elections.

Angela Vithoulkas, the Lord Mayoral candidate for the Living Sydney Independent team, said Clover Moore was attempting to “silence” the business community in the lead up to the Council election.

A spokesperson for Ms Moore outlined the measures the City of Sydney was has undertaken to inform the business community of their rights.

“The City is spending around $27,000 on a range of print ads in local and metro media. In addition the City has contracted the NSW Electoral Commission to undertake an awareness campaign, at an estimated cost of $215,000,” the spokesperson said. “The campaign is aimed at informing non-residents (including businesses) about their potential eligibility to vote in the City of Sydney local government elections on 8 September.”

The spokesperson for Ms Moore highlighted the positive relationship that Council has enjoyed with the business community. These included close business consultation on the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2030, providing $820 000 in value to support events promoting retail and a number of new programs from the City’s Retail Advisory Panel, which includes representatives of the retail industry and key government agencies.
