The Minns government has revealed more details about their $50 million plan for Moore Park South, which includes a new 20-hectare park featuring a nine-hole public golf course, an expanded 90-bay driving range, and a mini putt-putt golf course.

The park will also include renewed features such as a community sporting field, walking, running, and cycling paths and trails, lighting along main paths, amenities, picnic areas and park furniture, tree planting, and landscaping.

A $50 million allocation in this year’s state budget has been set aside for the project, following an earlier $2.6 million commitment for design and planning in 2024–25.

Community feedback is expected to help shape additional features such as an off-leash dog area, outdoor gym stations, a loop track, passive recreation zones, and a bike pump track.

Construction will begin once the current Moore Park Golf Course lease ends in June, with the park to open in stages from late 2026 and be fully completed by 2028.

Moore Park South: ‘Creating a backyard for the thousands of current and future residents’

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said, “Delivering Moore Park South is about creating a backyard for the thousands of current and future residents living in one of the densest communities in Australia.”

“Improving access to green open spaces has a direct link to improved physical and mental health outcomes for our communities, so we must continue to pair homes with investments in our public spaces,” he added.

The Minns Labor government added that the creation of Moore Park South will help balance rising density with new public open space.

The population within five kilometres of the proposed parkland is expected to climb to nearly 790,000 by 2041—making it one of the most densely populated areas in the country.

Last year, Labor pledged to cut nine holes from Moore Park Golf Course — Sydney CBD’s closest green — and turn nearly half of the 45-hectare site into parkland for nearby residents in Green Square, Redfern, Zetland, and Waterloo, aiming to offset rising residential density with more open space.

This plan has had a mixed reaction, and drawn strong opposition from an industry alliance, which includes Moore Park Golf Club, Golf NSW, Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia.

Scully said he hopes to make the park a “place to meet friends, spend time in nature, play, and enjoy community sports in the heart of inner Sydney.”

Community members and stakeholders can share their views on the draft landscape plan for Moore Park South between 28 October and 24 November 2025.
