Metro stations to use ‘interactive design process’

The State Government may be firm in its plans to see the Metro built, but at least the community will have an input into the look of the stations, according to Transport Minister David Campbell.

The Minister announced Sunday that an “interactive design process” would be used to “help shape the look and feel” of the Pyrmont and Rozelle metro stations, the two which have caused most consternation amongst local residents.

Under the process, a team which includes three of Sydney’s top architects, three leading landscape designers and three top artists will shortlist the three best designs for both station locations. These will be put on public display, and feedback will be provided to the metro contractors.

“As part of developing designs, Sydney Metro recognises that the stations at Pyrmont and Rozelle are unique village-style locations,” Mr Campbell said in a statement.

“Some favour a building that recaptures the architecture of the past while others prefer a modern statement. This is an opportunity to explore a full range of options.”

No names for the review panel were released, but a spokesperson for the Minister said more information would be forthcoming in “mid-October”, with the first sessions due to begin in “a few weeks” and the designs being released publicly in November.

In the meantime, the period for responses to the Metro’s Environmental Assessment concludes on October 12.
