It’s even shocking to me that this tiny restaurant produced the first perfectly balanced Lime Margarita ($15) I’ve had in Australia – but it did. Equally as impressive was the heart-felt, authentic Mexican cuisine – from the rich, fragrant Enchiladas de Mole Poblano ($22.90), a celebration dish featuring up to thirty different ingredients and seven types of chilli; to the supple Corn Tortillas ($5.90/3 pieces), it’s all hits and no misses. Most enchanting was the Cochinita Pibil ($23.90), a pre-Hispanic pork dish cooked with Valencia oranges in the Mayan style –perfect summer eating, wrapped in pliant corn tortillas with a Habanero and pineapple salsa. Warm weather also suits the vibrant red bowl of Vuelva a la Vida ($15.90), a seafood cocktail you spoon onto crackers. More heat can be added via a creamy green jalapeno sauce made from garlic, lemon and jalapenos – we liked it so much we asked for a takeaway pack. The specials board won favour with a Tamal Oaxaqueño ($12.90), a finely ground corn dough cooked in a banana leaf. A small but beautifully spiced serve of Tamal de Frutas ($14.90) saw seasonal fruits and honey cooked the same way. Savvy locals have already discovered this gem, so if you travel from afar (and you should), book!
