MC KEAN – THE MANIFESTO

MC KEAN – THE MANIFESTO

Michael McKean AKA MC Kean is yet another of a long line of Triple J’s “unearthed” machine which dates all the way back to the original winners Grinspoon. While sounds and genres differ greatly between the hard rockers of Lismore and this Sydney-town Hip-hop MC the laconic nature would be a similarity.

MC Kean’s lyrical content ranges from comical and cheeky to ponderous, political and posturing. His writing and spitting skills are right up there. It’s impossible not to draw comparisons to other Aussie Hip-hop Hilltop Hoods and The Herd. MC Kean’s sound wouldn’t be out of place on the same boom-box or on the same stage as these icons if this debut is anything to go by.

Like other Down Under rap acts the themes and feel is more suburban than urban like their US cousins. Something about our accent that just fits with this new sub-genre. The only thing is why do the vocals always have to sound like the MC is bored all the time? Is it uncool to be exited? All in all a very solid beginning.
