Fair Day kicks off Mardi Gras festival

Mardi Gras season will kick off in style this year with a day of fun for the whole family.

Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian community are expecting to welcome over 70, o00 people to the annual Mardi Gras Fair Day on Sunday, February 12. The official launch, held at Victoria Park, promises local and international live music and over 200 stalls.

CEO of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Michael Rolik said: “Fair Day is the annual kick-off to Sydney Mardi Gras 2012, and a smorgasbord of fun for the whole family.”

“Join Sydney’s LGBTQI family and friends as we converge on Victoria Park for a day of games, food, entertainment and socialising!”

Headline performer on the day, Brendan Maclean, said: “Fair Day is a great celebration of our community and the families within it.  It’s also a great chance to pick up some essential leather goods and oversized nipple piercings.”

The Triple J host, who will also appear in Baz Lurhmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby, will entertain crowds on the main stage, “with my totally famous amazing band. I’ll be bringing indie-rock to the glamour and puppies of fair day!”

Newtown-based Scottish singer Mary Kiani will also perform, ahead of her album launch.

“It’s in the top three gigs I’ve always wanted to do; I’m over the moon!” Ms Kiani said. “It’s an amazing day, fun filled for everybody, and as a performer to be able to work on the main stage this time, I’m just thrilled!”

The day will also host music from the NSW Police Band, The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir and Brisbane-based alternative folk singer Kristy Apps.

Trevor Ashley will also hit the stage, channeling Dame Shirley Bassey in a preview for his upcoming show Diamonds Are for Trevor.

A cooking stage will be present for the first time, where former MasterChef contestants Cleo Kerameas and Peter Vickery will go head to head in a Celebrity Chef Challenge, hosted by Martin Boetz of Longrain Restaurant. All fair-goers are welcome to enter with a gold coin donation.
