Drag Queens will light up Oxford Street in a preview to the world famous Mardis Gras Parade.

On Saturday, February 25, a week before the main event, the Golden Mile will become a stage for drag queens, Zumba classes and even masseurs in the ‘Main Drag’ spectacle.

The day is an initiative of the City Of Sydney, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills Business Partnership and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Businesses along the urban avenue hope to benefit from the thousands who migrate to Sydney for the colourful celebration.

The event will promote Oxford St as a destination for visitors to the city.

Promotions and Marketing Manager at Stonewall Hotel, Glenn Hansen, said the day will be beneficial for his business.

“Stonewall Hotel is proud to be part of the main Drag event,” he said.

“This will be a great event and will bring Oxford St to life with a Wizard of Oz touch just before Mardi Gras.

“Hopefully the event will be great for the businesses involved. They have a main stage on Taylor Square but Stonewall and the Shift will also have stages with shows during the afternoon.”

Mr Hanson said the Stonewall Stage will be hosted by the fabulous Tora Hymen; the blonde headed diva.

The Mardi Gras’ most famous qualities will be out in force on the day including cocktails, Drag performances and a competition for the best window display.

Onlookers can browse at the Dorothy look-alike competition taking place, as well as a Wheel-of-Fortune, muscle boys and plenty of busking.

Oxford St resident Bronte Lovibond, said the ‘Main Drag’ is needed in the area.

“It’s very good promotion. The Golden Mile is one of Sydney’s most famous spots, so why not take advantage of the crowds by showing them what the strip has to offer, which is more than enough to entertain everybody.”
