A man who was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly threatened them with a knife has been charged with 5 offences.

The 26-year-old man from Maroubra was shot and tasered in the parking lot of Matraville Woolworths after police attempted to arrest him and he reportedly pulled out a knife. Police were called to the location at around 4:30pm on Wednesday October 26 after the man was reported to have assaulted two women.

The man was taken to St Vincents hospital after being treated at the scene, but was reported as in a stable condition by NSW Police.

He has been charged with three counts of assaulting a police officer, shoplifting and being armed with a knife.

“Serious situation” says commissioner

Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin Fileman called the incident an “extremely dangerous and serious situation”.

The acting commissioner also sent out his “thoughts” to the man and others involved in the incident, including police.

The 26-year-old will face a bedside hearing at Waverley Local Court on Friday.
