Two men were arrested yesterday in Surry Hills during Anzac Day events, in separate incidents across the day. One man allegedly bit a police officer while officers were attempting to speak with the 21-year-old.

Just after 4am on Tuesday April 25, the 21-year-old was arrested after allegedly assaulting two police officers.

While police were speaking with the man, he allegedly became violent and bit an officer on the hand. The 21-year-old was taken to Surry Hills Police station where he was charged with assault and resisting police.

Another 41-year-old man was arrested for allegedly not complying with a move on direction, and was also taken to Surry Hills Police Station. The man was charged with refusal to comply with a direction order, as well as intimidation and stalking.

Both men were refused bail and are set to appear in court today.

Police praise good behaviour

Despite the two arrests, NSW Police have praised Anzac day crowds for overall good behaviour.

“It was great to see the Anzac spirit on display with crowds cheering on veterans, their families and members of the community in marches, which have been both safe and successful,” said Operation Commander and  Assistant Commissioner Scott Whyte.

Whyte said that over 7000 people attended the Dawn Service in Sydney’s CBD, and over 11,500 marched in the crowd.

“While police responded to a few isolated incidents, we were pleased to see crowds paying their respects appropriately on one of the country’s most important national days,” he said.
