Watching a buff waiter use all the European tools at his disposal to massage more than just meat for the lady at the next table created an I-want-what-she’s-having moment. My Drunken Chicken, Radicchio, Mint and Cucumber Salad ($18) paled in comparison to her Classic Style Steak Tartare ($21.50/$36.00), a dish that’s lived on the specials board for the last fifteen years. I console myself by pinching plump Grilled Scallops ($18) from my dining companion’s plate. Like all the proteins I sample, they’re well handled. Combinations walk on the mild side, but with nearly every table full of local area regulars, it appears simple bistro fare is exactly what the doctors (and their wives) ordered. My standout bite is the Italian coleslaw presented with the Cotoletta of Free-Range Pork ($32). My dining companion descends upon the bone, announcing: “We chew bones where I’m from in Mount Isa.” Smiling into my 2010 Stefano Lubiana Pinot Noir ($58/bottle), selected from the short but interesting wine list, I register even our coolly impassive waiter cracking a grin. A slightly split Vanilla and Honey Crème Brûlée ($15) with poached rhubarb is eclipsed by a soft, pillowy Passionfruit Marshmallow ($3); a timely reminder it’s a school night and time for bed.
